Microsoft to buy Yahoo?

First, I said this would happen in my 2006 Year in Review, but it looks like Microsoft will be purchasing Yahoo for between $50-60 billion dollars. This is a good move for both involved. I have really been noticing Yahoo being more and more open to .NET developers in the past few months, which is the first step to getting things integrated and transitioned in my opinion. They even had a session or two at Mix this week and could not help but wonder just how far off this merger would be.

The two have great platforms to develop against and I think from a developer perspective this will prove very adventageous to us as .NET developers because the APIs of both will be easier to work with and the information we will have access to will be unbelievable. Google will really have a strong competitor on their door steps too, if you look at combining the two market shares of search traffic.

Look for this to most likely be officially announced within the next week or two. I am excited as a developer, just behind the Silverlight stuff this week. I mean what a week for .NET developers!

This would be a huge deal in terms of business acquisitions. It is not a done deal by any means. I would not want to be the person in charge of integrating cultures between the two companies. The infrastructure difference between the two would take a long time to sort out unless Microsoft plans on killing the majority of yahoo's offerings. What are the benefits to an acquisition except reacting to google. Would this not lead credence to the end of the desktop OS model and more of a web enabled model. How is that going to be reflected on internally inside Micrsoft?

I have been interested to see Microsoft interacting with the PHP community and they even invited Wes Furlong to Mix '07. I think one strategic move to would be to retain Rasmus Lerdorf if they indeed purchased yahoo.

I still wonder if this deal will happen and I think if it does they face a long battle. A combined yahoo and Microsoft strategy still would be playing catch up to google.
